I am looking for some book recommendations
and I was hoping you could help me out. I am looking for “the best of” books on BDSM, Fetishes, Sexual Orientation and Gender. I am not looking for fiction, I am looking for books that are academic in nature. Books that cover theory, history and psychology. I doubt I will find one book that covers all three neither was I thinking that I could read just one book and feel like I “knew it all”. I am just looking for a good place to start. :-)
Does anyone have any suggestions or know what books are the “have to reads” for people interested in BDSM, Fetishes and Sexual Orientation and Gender?

For raw knowledge?
“The Science of Orgasm” - Barry R. Komisaruk, Carlos Beyer-Flores, and Beverly Whipple
“Roman Sexualities” - by Judith P. Hallett and Marilyn B. Skinner
While these are’t s/m in nature, they are purely academic studies of sexuality. The “Roman Sexualities” book is especially good since it shows how the Romans viewed things like orientation as vague concepts that had no real relation to gender. Both are cracking good reads. Be warned tho, they are clinical and, as such, can be a bit dry.
I would recommend “The Story of O by Pauline Reage. It is a Masterpiece!
For a “How-to” I’d recommend, “Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns.”
The book of BDSM fiction that made me realize I was a masochist and there was no denying it was Pat Califia’s “Macho Sluts.”
LadyTyyger above suggests books about the acient Romans (And I agree — they were kinky!) and I’d also suggest Victorian erotica — most stories have a good birching or strapping in them, and it just seems so normal and commonplace (which it sorta was, at that time!)
I can compile you a list. I have read hundreds of books and know which ones suck and which ones don’t I can also send you tell you of the books that get REALLY good into theory (which very few do). Give me a day or two and I will get back to you, send me an email.
Have you discovered LibraryThing yet? I’ll skip describing it, but will point you to the collection of EdwardDain (http://www.librarything.com/profile/edwarddain), who is working on a dissertation on all things kink, and has compiled an amazing library of reference works on sex.

Try The MarketPlace Series by Laura Antoniou. these are incredible, and give a good insight into what it means to be a slave… i could not put them down…
