Where Is The Forum? by JohnBaku

Don’t get too excited… we do not have a “Forum” just yet on FetLife. To be very honest, one of the reasons we do not have a forum is because I am not convinced on the direction to take the Forum in. At least not a direction I am comfortable with.

So, here is where I am so far in my thinking. To start off with, the following are decisions I have made that I am really excited about.

  • I will not personally moderate the forum, nor do I believe in moderators in the traditional sense.
  • The community as a whole will moderate itself. Each person will be an given equal say in what is removed on the site. Each one of you will be able to “vote up” or “vote down” any post or comment that really liked or really did not like. And if a certain threshold is reached the post or comment will get permanently removed from the system. This way nobody has the burden of having to play God.

Now, it is the following question that I ask myself everyday that has been driving me crazy and preventing me from implementing some type of forum.

Where will the forum live in the site?

Yeah, yeah, sounds like a dead simple question but for me it is not: Will we just have a forum section on the site? Will I just add a forum to each fetish? Will I just add a forum to each location? Maybe even add a forum to both each fetish and each location?

I have to admit, intuitively I do not like the idea of having just a forum section, I feel like it does not add much value to the community like that. I prefer a forum being attached to either each fetish or to each location so their is more context to each discussion. But then again maybe my hesitation comes from neither of those solutions being good enough either.

What do you think?

  1. Hi John!, Here’s my .02 on the forum question. Most of us have more than one fetish so a forum for each fetish might be a little much, however, attaching forums to provinces and states etc would allow folks to be in contact with others in their general area. Also, I think you still need a free-for-all forum with no geographic bounderies.

    Cheers, kayla
